BANDUNG, Ditmawa ITB - Waste production in Indonesia is very high, and an effective waste processing method is needed.
A group of ITB students consists of Safira Salsabillah, Adinda Izma, and M. Syams Apriandas developed an environmental start-up for waste management called Wise Waste. This business serves as a waste management service based on the 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). The services provided are waste handling consultations, routine waste transportation, and waste processing.
"Considering the composition of organic waste in Indonesia, Wise Waste provides organic waste processing solutions using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology. Suppose you can manage all organic waste properly at the source. In that case, the budget for waste processing can be reduced by 23-37% percent and increase waste management effectiveness at the TPA. As for inorganic waste, Wise Waste collaborates with several private parties who can reprocess domestic waste and use domestic waste as raw material for production," explained Safira.
He said that the method used by Wise Waste itself was carried out in several locations in Sumedang Regency and Bandung City. There are various customers, ranging from schools, restaurants to apartments. Waste production never stops every day and increases public awareness of the obligation to manage waste wisely. The business opportunity that Wise Waste has is considered quite large.
According to him, Wise Waste can impact an environmental, economic, and social perspective. The waste management system starts with increasing public awareness of the importance of waste management from the source. That way, the community will carry out independent waste sorting at the source. Waste that it has sort can facilitate the processing process, such as organic waste, which dominates up to 60%. It can reduce so that there will be less pile of garbage in the TPA. Also, reducing waste accumulation can minimize the chance for a disease, and it more comfortable environment will be formed.
The business of Wise Waste initially received financial support in the 2020 Student Entrepreneurship Program (PMW). The program opens opportunities for students to selectively get funding for those who want to develop a business or start a new business. Safira said that she could collaborate with Bandung City's Services Environment (DLH), Sumedang Regency's DLH, and Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia with the funds provided.
"Wise waste was initiated in early 2019 and continues today. At first, our focus was only on waste transportation services and education. However, over time there are more services from Wise Waste due to requests from clients. In the future, we want to develop processed waste products on a larger scale. Such as processing waste from Black Soldier Fly larvae as animal and pet feed," concluded Safira.
