BANDUNG, kemahasiswaan.itb.ac.id – Determining a career direction is not easy for most students. Many of them are still grappling with questions about their potential, interests, and the life goals that they want to achieve. Seeing the importance of the process of knowing oneself, ITB Career Center in collaboration with PT Torrecid Indonesia presents a Career Development Webinar: Know Yourself and Find Your Career on Monday (06/23/2025) through the Zoom Meeting platform. This students-targeting activity is a first step to explore their potential before entering the professional world.
In the Know Yourself session, Yunita as the Head of Acquisition & Talent Management of Torrecid Indonesia invited all participants to understand themselves as the first step in determining a career. Humans are social creatures who have complex thoughts and feelings so that sometimes people find it difficult to understand themselves. According to her, humans consist of three aspects, namely self-concept, motivation, and passion. So, in order to know ourselves, we must be able to understand these three things.
First, regarding self-concept. It can be interpreted as what a person believes about themself based on what they experience and believe. There are three important aspects in recognizing self-concept: (1) Self-image; how a person views themself, (2) self-esteem; how a person values ??what they have, and (3) ideal self; what a person wants to have in themself. It will be a problem if a big gap exists between ideal self and self-esteem. For example, someone longs to be a smart person but in fact he is lacking in intellect, then he will have difficulty in building his self-concept.
Second, about motivation. This is a process that drives a person to act with a certain intensity, direction, and persistence in achieving a goal. There are three main aspects of motivation, namely intensity (how much effort is expended), direction (focus on the goal), and persistence (persistence in maintaining the effort). According to Yunita, there are 2 theories of motivation that can be used to describe a person's motivation, namely Maslow's Motivation and McClelland's Motivation theories.
Maslow's Motivation theory divides human motivation into five levels. Starting from the basics, there are physiological needs, safety, affection and belonging, appreciation, and self-actualization. According to Maslow, a person will only be motivated to fulfill the needs at the next level if the needs at the previous level have been met. Meanwhile, McClelland's Motivation theory divides motivation into three main types of needs: (1) achievement, the drive to achieve; (2) affiliation, the desire to build social relationships; and (3) power, the desire to have influence. These two theories help participants understand that each person's source of motivation can be different, depending on their respective life conditions and priorities.
Third, passion. Passion is something that is very much liked, appreciated, and pursued consistently until it becomes part of one's identity. Passion in certain things comes with several characteristics, such as an interest in the particular field, not getting bored easily, feeling that the activity is very meaningful, and the drive to continue learning and developing in it. By recognizing the concept of self, motivation and passion, participants are expected to be able to design career steps that are more in line with themselves. This session is the beginning for students to better understand who they are and what goals they want to achieve in the future.
"Basically, when you know who you are, you usually become clearer about what career you are looking for," said Yunita.
